Work up your new favorite cold weather accessory with these felted mittens!
FOUR Tuesdays from 6-8pm on the following dates: Nov 4th & 18th, Dec 2nd & 9th
These Snowball Throwin’ Mittens by Cindy Pilon are aptly named - they’re perfect for even your snowiest winter activities! Felted wool is stronger than regular knitted material, and is naturally water repellent and resistant to soiling.
This class will cover not just the knitting of the mittens, but also how to felt wool for an even, strong result. And don’t worry if you don’t have a washing machine; this class will cover possible alternatives!
These are the perfect project for a confident knitter that wants to learn a few new techniques. At a 14 stitch gauge, these mittens knit up relatively quickly but felt down in a snuggly, well fitting pair of your new favorite winter accessories. They’ll be your go-to for snowball games, snowman making, or building a sturdy little igloo!
What you need to know and be comfortable completing without help from the instructor (or you're willing to learn before this class): Knit, purl, knitting in the round in a small circumference
What you'll learn in this class: How to felt knitted mittens in your washing machine OR with boiling water if you do not have access to a machine, increases and picking up stitches, and adding a cuff to felted fabric. Theresa will also talk about some additional options to make your mittens extra special, like adding a fleece lining or embroidery!
Required Materials:
We hope you'll consider supporting us by purchasing your materials at Knit 1!
Yarn: 100 to 310 yards of NON-SUPERWASH worsted weight yarn. (In order for this pattern to work, we strongly recommend you use Cascade 220 - which we'll be getting in the shop in a couple weeks! While we do have other yarns that may felt, Cascade is a champion of felting into a dense, even fabric.)
Needles:
- US 10.5 needles in your preferred method for working in a small circumference (24”+ circulars for magic loop, DPNs, or 12” circular needles. Note that if you use small circular needles, you will need either magic loop or DPNs for the mitten thumbs)
- An extra set of needles one or two sizes smaller for ribbing
Notions: Tapestry needle, scissors, stitch markers, waste yarn
What you'll get:
- Four 2-hour class sessions with expert instruction by Theresa
- The Snowball Throwin' Mittens pattern (PDF via email & in your Ravelry library)
This class is intended for adults. We welcome our younger knitters in private lessons only. For inquiries, please reach out to breean@knit1chgo.com.
