The Paul Klee Sweater by Midori Hirose is inspired by the colorful work of painter Paul Klee. In this class, we will learn to create a palette, plan a color scheme, and knit a top down round yoke pattern for what will surely be your next knitted masterpiece.
This class will of course cover the techniques necessary to create a well constructed and well finished garment, but will also start with a deep delve into color theory and planning.
Learn to pick a palette, assess compatibility for colorwork, and play with yarn combinations. Then take everything you’ve learned and with Carissa’s guidance, stitch up your next favorite sweater!
Please note that this class includes a session of Color Theory for Crafters as its first session!
What you need to know and be comfortable completing without help from the instructor (or you're willing to learn before this class): How to knit, purl, knit in the round, how to knit small circumference, have some basic knowledge of stranded colorwork
What you'll learn in this class: How to work a top-down round yoke sweater, tips and tricks for knitting better stranded colorwork, how to pick colors and create a palette using color theory
Required Materials:

Yarn: Klee calls for several colors of fingering weight yarn appropriate for colorwork. We recommend a non-superwash or lightly superwash wool for this project to allow for consistent tension
- Main Color: 383 to 1717 yards
- Contrast Color(s): 27 to 37 yards of between 14 and 24 colors (depending on your chose size)
Recommended yarns from the shop include: Lamana Como, Cascade Heritage
Needles: Please note that needle size is a recommendation, and we recommend completing a swatch before purchasing all the needles recommended for this pattern.
- US 2 circular needles in 32"/40" and in your preferred format for knitting small circumference
- US 2.5 circular needles in 32"/40" and in your preferred format for knitting small circumference
- US 5 circular needles in 32"/40" for colorwork (or size needed to maintain gauge)
Notions: stitch markers, waste yarn or barber cord, tapestry needle, scissors

Class Policies
CLASS POLICIES & GUIDELINES
- All class fees are non-refundable. If you have a conflict, you must notify us at least 7 days before the start date of your first class in order to receive store credit. We will always do our best to help you reschedule, but it may not always be possible.
- Our group classes and private lessons are designed for adults ages 18 and up.
- No store credit will be issued for unattended classes and no store credit will be issued for cancellations made within 7 days of the start date of the first class.
- We put the health and safety of all our staff and community members first. If you have been exposed to Covid or you are otherwise feeling unwell, we ask that you please stay home.
- We have a class minimum of 3 students, so it’s never a bad idea to sign up with a friend or two! If you are the only student that signs up for one of our classes, we will contact you ahead of time and issue a full refund if there is a cancellation on our part.
- We understand that sometimes students need some extra help outside of class, so we offer Project Support and Private Lessons.
- For our students to get personalized attention, we like to keep our class sizes small. For this reason, we require students to sign up in advance for all of our classes, lessons, and project support sessions.
- Speak Kindly: Knitting and crochet can be challenging, so let’s be KIND and PATIENT with ourselves and each other during the learning journey. Each person's energy has an impact on the group dynamic!
- Neutral & Positive: Let’s keep our discussion topics generally relaxed and positive so everyone feels comfortable in the space. When in doubt, stick to topics related to what we're gathering together for – knitting, crochet, fiber.
- Scents & Allergens: To make the space accessible and friendly to those with scent sensitivities, we discourage any particularly strong smells or heavy perfumes. Additionally, you are welcome to bring snacks for yourself to share, however, we ask that you inform us if you're bringing anything with common allergens.
- Group Class Dynamic & 1-1 Support: We host small sized classes at Knit 1 so that we can accommodate the needs of everyone taking the class. This means we'll need to balance group instruction with intermittent one-on-one help. Your instructor will do their best to support everyone in the class equitably.
- Prerequisite Skills: If you need additional 1-1 support, we offer Project Support and Private Lessons. Your instructor may recommend these options to you if they discover that you'd benefit from additional support outside of class or in the case you do not have the prerequisite skills for a particular class. We will discuss these options with you outside of the class environment.
