If you recently learned how to knit and you're ready to cast on your first sweater...then this is the class for you!
The Step-by-Step Sweater is the perfect first garment, with clear instructions, simple shaping, and it's knit in a gauge that works up quickly!
Our expert instructor Keish will guide you through all the skills needed to tackle your first garment with great success, and they'll provide options for customization so you can knit a sweater that you love wearing!
Learn the foundations of gauge, top-down, seamless sweater construction, and fit!
What you need to know and be comfortable completing without help from the instructor (or you're willing to learn before this class): How to cast on, knit, purl, and bind off, how to knit in the round using circular needles
What you'll learn in this class: How to knit in small circumference using magic/traveling loop, German short rows, top-down raglan sweater construction, M1L and M1R increases, and (optionally) how to create jogless stripes!
Required Materials:

Yarn: The gauge for this sweater is 16 stitches/4 inches. You will need Aran or light bulky/chunky weight yarn – ask us for help selecting your materials! There is an option to make a solid color or striped version of this sweater.
- Solid: 740 to 1,480 yards of yarn of your choice
- Striped: 575 to 1,230 yards of the main color yarn and 250 to 495 yards of the stripe color yarn
Recommended yarns from the shop: Cascade 220 Superwash Aran or 220 Superwash Aran Wave, Cascade 128 Superwash, Malabrigo Chunky, Malabrigo Vientos, Cascade Eco+ or Ecological Wool
Needles: Please complete your gauge swatch before purchasing all the needles required for this project, as needle size is just a suggestion.
- US 7 16" circular needles
- US 7 32" circular needles
- US 9 16" circular needles
- US 9 32" to 40" circular needles (depending on sweater size)
Notions: Stitch markers, waste yarn or stitch holder cord, tapestry needle, scissors, measuring tape
