Knit a Koyo Hat
Sundays from 1:30-3:30pm December 1st, 8th & 15th
Get ready for winter weather and holiday gifting with this cozy, squishy, fluffy brioche hat! The Koyo hat uses two contrasting colors of bulky yarn, a unique cast-on, and brioche stockinette to create a delightfully warm hat. The bulky yarn makes for a quick knit, great for gifting (or for keeping, no judgement here)!
What you need to know: Must be comfortable knitting in the round. Prior experience with magic loop preferred if that method will be used for small circumference (instead of double pointed needles).
What you’ll learn: Provisional cast-on, brioche stockinette, brioche 4st decrease, brioche in the round.
Required Materials:
Yarn: Bulky weight yarn in two colors. We recommend Malabrigo Mecha, Malabrigo Chunky and SpinCycle Plump for this project.
For Short Hat:MC/Strand 1: 60 (68, 75) yds // CC/Strand 2: 55 (62, 70) yds
For Long Hat:MC/Strand 1: 70 (80, 90) yds // CC/Strand 2: 60 (70, 80) yds
Needles:
US 9 (5.5 mm) 16” circular, as well as US 9 double pointed needles OR 32” circular for magic loop or size needed to achieve gauge. Gauge: 12 sts and 36 rnds = 4” / 10 cm in Stockinette Brioche/Tuck Stockinette worked on smaller needle, measured relaxed once dry after washing and blocking.
You’ll also need a spare needle US 11 (8 mm) 16” circular or 32” cable for magic loop for CO and base rows only.
Notions: Crochet hook size G/6.0 (4 mm). Standard knitting notions (scissors, stitch markers, tape measure, etc.)
