Terminal Cold

Ladies and gentlemen, tomorrow you can fry eggs on sidewalks, heat up soup in the ocean and get help from wandering maniacs, if you choose.

My friend Jeanne told me about a Twilight  Zone episode where the earth is shaken from its orbit and we can't escape from endless winter.  Rod Serling was so visionary.  So if that happens, I'm going to tell you what's on the needles - mine and Cory's so that you have something to do since you won't be able to go outside.  Oh, wait, we can't go outside now.

Yellow Wall Cardigan by Judy O'brien
I'm knitting the Yellow Wall Cardigan in Ryley by Hikoo.

Hitchiker by Martina Behm
I'm knitting this is in a handyed fingering weight that we will be carrying in the next few months.  I now understand why more than 13,000 people have knit this.  I will make another one for sure.

Dovetail Shawl by Judy Marples
Cory is knitting this in Kauni Effektyarn.  It appears to be addictive, you can come see it for yourselves, it's beautiful and she hasn't put it down in a week.

If she tires of the Dovetail she'll go back to this.  Alba by Martin Storey is in the new book from Rowan called The Pure Wool Worsted Collection.

A practical joke perpetrated by Mother Nature?  Perhaps.  A practical joke with the trappings of a nightmare of terror and desperation played out in the terminal winter of the Twilight Zone.

Not to complain, but we have MORE snow.  About the only thing that can make me feel better right now is YARN, and as luck would have it when I came to the store today there were 3 BIG cartons.  Inside was, among other fabulous things, the above.  We are now stocking this gorgeous new wool from Rowan.  It's soft 100% wool, machine washable in worsted weight. We have 30 shades ranging from soft neutrals to mid tone brights and deep darks.  There are 2 new books featuring the yarn, both authored by one of our favorite designers, Martin Storey.  Stop by and see the cover sweater that we just started.

Also, in the box was Rowan Fine Art.  A blend of merino, mohair and mulberry silk comes to us from an enterprise in South Africa that is committed to employing women from the poorest areas of the country.  This yarn specially designed for socks is also perfect for accessories and we are going to start a seed stitch scarf mixing it with Kid Silk Haze just as soon as we finish this blog post!

Just in time for Polar Vortex III is Rowan Cocoon.  This one!  Passion.  Big chunky, squishy cables.  The sweater is in the store for you to see!  It. Is. Luscious.

Passion
Gonna go knit now.

We're Open During Vortex II

"Futile complaining reduces discomfort by reducing the discrepancy between reality and a person's standards," a psychologist wrote—in January 2010—in Psychology Today. "If another person lends a sympathetic ear or agrees with our complaint, then the discrepancy has been addressed even if it has not been reduced. Sometimes, sweet validation is all we need."

This quote, from the Chicago Tribune, is attributed to a Psychology Today article.  So I post it here to say that if you want to come in and whine tomorrow, feel free; we will most definitely lend a sympathetic ear and sweetly validate your complaints.  We have a nice space heater, big steaming radiators and a lot of wool!  We're planning on Project Class tomorrow night from 6:30 - 8:30.  Feel free to come in earlier if you'd like.  We are closed on Tuesday as we normally are.

If you don't make it in, whine, and stay warm!

News

This isn't really news, but it's cold. It snowed FEET of lake effect snow in northwest Indiana yesterday.   They're still digging out.
Do you remember this old school snowstorm?

In REAL news we have been restocking the shelves at Knit 1. Here are the highlights:   We have a new shipment of In Silk  it's one of our best-loved yarns.  It appears felted in the skein, but knits up into a soft, drapey fabric with great stitch definition.  We also have new Noro!  For those who don't like the wooly wools we have Taiyo sport; very soft, great colors and only 15% wool for a great all-seasons yarn.

We are really excited about the new yarns and Magalog from Skacel -- Riley and SimpliNatural. We bought color packs so we can swatch and experiment.  The colors are luscious the Hikoo SimpliNatural is incredibly soft and a soft and natural palette to match  Come by, see them and weigh in on patterns.

We also got a really cool bulky superwash wool from Ella Rae.  The colors are gorgeous!  I want to make Zumthor in Charcoal because I can't get enough of the gray this year.  Anyone want to join me?

I must have been smitten with lace, because we have a lot of it!  There's Findlay in 9 colors, Lace Merino in several new colors and Cima from Shibui.  I just love how it knits with mohair.  We have several projects here so you can see how luscious it is and if you want ideas for what to knit with it, we have tons!

SALE yarn:  I just put a bunch of Noro Silk Garden Lite in the sale bin.  Come and git it.  Plus, Takeuma is 20% off.

And, I have a favor:  We have had Malabrigo on order for awhile, it was supposed to ship today, I can't even remember what's in the order, but I know there's a lot of Rasta plus all of the new Rasta colors.  Every day we cross our fingers that it'll arrive so, can you all please do a Malabrigo dance?  Thanks in advance and I'll post when it gets here.

New classes are going up as soon as I send this.

The heat's on, so to speak, and it's warm and cozy here at Knit 1.
